Common problems with kitchen hoods and how to fix them:
Using a commercial kitchen hood for a long period of time can cause a number of problems. So that you can diagnose any problems yourself, we will cover some of the most common questions we get asked about commercial kitchen hoods.

All hoods and exhaust systems should last a long time, something must be wrong if your experiences problems early on in its life.

Your Hood Is Not Extracting

You need to check a couple of things if you notice your kitchen hood isn’t doing what it’s supposed to – extracting.

It’s important to check that the airflow outside is not blocked in any way if your  hood is ducted outside. Go outside and confirm the air is flowing through the vent..

A motor malfunction will most likely be the cause if you don’t see or feel anything outside. Call a professional to handle this – you shouldn’t try to fix it yourself.

You’ll find a large selection of electric motors available online. Please don’t buy one thinking that it might fit your fan. many times we have seen that the existing motor is the wrong size or type, because someone had changed it without paying attention to the size of the fan. Call us CFM Testing for an assessment of your fan. We will know why the motor got burnt in the first place and replace it with a correct one, if possible.

Your Kitchen Hood Smells

Kitchen hoods that give off a bad smell are the exact opposite of what they’re supposed to do – they’re supposed to eliminate odors.

The reason behind this is usually a clogged filter. Kitchen hood filters can be forgiven if they are not cleaned or replaced regularly. These filters are often out of sight and out of mind. The first thing you should do is to clean your hood filters if they smell funky and if the filters look greasy and dirty.

You can generally wash your filters either by hand or in the dishwasher unless they’re made of fabric. To prevent bad smells from developing, it’s recommended that you do this once a month or as often as required based on your cooking load.

Pests or mold are the next most likely cause if you have a bad smell coming from your supply ducts and your MUA filters are clean. Algae, mold, mice and shrews may be the cause. Although these cases may not always be the reason for the smells, but it’s not impossible. It’s something worth considering if you don’t see anything else right away.

Your Kitchen Hood Lights Won't Turn On

Kitchen hood problems like this are common, but they’re easy to fix

Although you can change the lightbulb of your kitchen hood yourself if you use the right bulb, it’s not as simple as changing a regular light bulb.

If you’re not sure which to get, consult your manual or contact a professional if you’re not confident in your DIY skills.

Although your Kitchen hood light can break, there are some steps you can take to prevent it.

It is important to note that kitchen hood lights must only be used when necessary. Otherwise, they may malfunction sooner rather than later. Sure, they make perfect ambiance lighting for your kitchen, but the more you use them, the sooner they will fail.

My Kitchen Hood makes excessive noise

The same steps you would take if you detect a bad smell or an airflow issue need to be taken if your kitchen hood is making much more noise than normal.

Make sure the filters aren’t clogged first. Unless it is, you need to check if there is something blocking the airflow.

Make sure the hood was installed properly if you have this problem with a brand-new hood. Wrong size of duct work could cause noise.

If you can not be sure what the noise is, call the CFM Testing for an assessment of the problem. Our highly qualified and experience technicians can help you resolve the issues.
